ATHLETIC INSTRUCTOR – WOMEN'S SOCCER
The
Faculty of Physical Education and Health at the University
of Toronto is seeking an experienced and energetic Athletic
Instructor to take on the responsibilities of head coach
of the Varsity Blues Women's Soccer program. The ideal
candidate is committed to leading the program to national
prominence within the context of an internationally
recognized research and teaching university.
The
Athletic Instructor will be expected to contribute to
the culture of evidence-based, educationally focused
healthy high performance sport at the University of
Toronto and teach related courses in the academic program.
The Athletic Instructor will report to the Director
of Athletics and for academic matters, to the Associate
Dean, Undergraduate Education.
Key
roles and responsibilities of the position include:
a)
Coaching the women's interuniversity (Varsity Blues)
soccer team, including the direction and operation of
all training and competition.
b)
Student athlete recruitment, mentoring, development,
and retention for women's soccer.
c)
Recruiting and supervision of soccer support staff,
including assistant coaches, managers, and student leaders.
d)
Teaching in the undergraduate program in physical and
health education.
e)
Assist in the creation and management of an annual budget
for women's interuniversity soccer, including participation
in revenue generating activities that meet the program's
financial objectives.
f)
Promotion and engagement of positive relations with
the alumnae and the University of Toronto community.
g)
Support the overall development of co-curricular opportunities
for students in the university.
The
Athletic Instructor will be in support of and act in
accordance with outlined direction and initiatives of
the Faculty of Physical Education and Health and the
University of Toronto as they relate to the educational
objectives of athletics, equity, fund raising, community
relations, budget management and appropriate administrative
responsibilities.
The
successful candidate will possess a post-graduate degree
(preferably a master's degree or equivalent) with the
appropriate NCCP and soccer certifications (B license
preferred), as well as a minimum of five years of coaching
experience, preferably at the university level or elite
club level. The demonstrated ability to coach,
teach and mentor, in an educational environment, in
a student-centered way, is expected. In addition, effective
communication skills, and proven organizational, leadership,
and management skills are required. The successful
candidate will be appointed to the rank of Athletic
Instructor in a contractually limited term appointment
of three years.
The
rank and starting salary will be commensurate with experience
and qualifications.

Responsibilities
|
To
act as head coach and administrator of the Women's
Volleyball program; to assist with the administration
of a variety of departmental programs and services.
|
Qualifications
|
- Successful completion of a post-secondary
degree program in a relevant discipline with
a minimum of 5 years experience as a coach and/or
athlete at an elite level is required. N.C.C.P
Level III certification or equivalent is preferred.
An equivalent combination of education and experience
may be considered.
- Experience establishing, administering and
maintaining an aggressive recruiting program
is required. Sports administration experience
would be beneficial.
- A demonstrated commitment to client service
- specifically students, staff, faculty and
external contacts. Excellent interpersonal
skills to promote the women's volleyball program
within Ryerson and the community; liaise with
internal departments such as Admissions and
Student Services; maintain on- and off-campus
media contacts.
- Excellent verbal and written communication
skills to assist in the administration of a
variety of departmental programs and services
as assigned on project days; organizing athletic
banquet; producing brochures; acting as an advisor
in the Academic Success program, fundraising,
participating in alumni events, acting as a
sports coordinator and setting up information
booth and answering questions during Preview
Nights and Tour and Discussion Days.
- Excellent judgement, decision-making and analytical
skills are needed to analyze competitive systems;
develop and adjust team offensive and defensive
systems; compile and analyze team statistical
and historical information.
- Excellent leadership and motivational skills
to counsel, support, advise and monitor team
members academic performance; assist with time
management, goal setting, etc; assign and coordinate
work of part-time support staff.
- Strong organizational and time management
skills are required to organize, administer
and coach the team within the Ontario Universities
Athletics (OUA) and Canadian Interuniversity
Sport (CIS) leagues; follow league rules and
regulations; participate in league contests;
attend all OUA and CIS Volleyball Coaches' meetings
as required.
- Strong budget management skills are needed
to plan, monitor and operate with allocated
team budget guidelines; provide recommendations
for future budgets.
