SEMI-FINAL #1 CIS championship: Badgers miracle run continues as they beat No. 1 Montreal
LANGLEY, B.C. (CIS) - A strong performance by Brock University keeper Tiffany Schriver (Burlington, Ont.) helped keep the Badgers Cinderella season alive with a 2-0 victory over No. 1 ranked University de Montreal Saturday afternoon at Trinity Western University in Langley, B.C. Championship website: http://www.cisport.ca/e/championships/w_soccer/2008 "We are a very young team and we were maturing as the game progressed. We were playing together and executing on defence and in every big tournament you need a little luck and today we had it," commented Brock head coach Charles Ivanov after another historical win for his team. "We played with a lot of heart and were desperate in desire to win the game. There was no tomorrow for us." The fifth year keeper made ten saves to propel the Badgers to their first ever CIS national championship final. Brock, who is guaranteed at least a silver medal, will be earning their first ever CIS championship medal. It's a huge accomplishment to be in the finals tomorrow, it has been our goal since the season began," commented player of the game Scriver. "I'm really proud of our team. We've been through a lot this season. We deserve to be here." On the offensive end the Badgers got goals from Sloan George (Oakville, Ont.) in the 41st minute and the insurance marker by Laura Tirone (Welland, Ont.) in the 69th minute. Brock had a bend, but not break match. They withstood an offensive barrage from the Montreal Carabins, who had 24 total shots, but did not give up a marker to QSSF champions. "Brock is a team that can step up to and challenge, with every game we are making history. I guess you can call it our Cinderella story," added Badger defender Brittany Vanderkruk (Flamborough, Ont.). The win means the Badgers will play the winner in the gold medal match Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. against the winner of semi-final #2 between No 4 University of Victoria and No 6 Trinity Western University. The Carabins will match up against the loser in Sunday's bronze medal match at 1 p.m. SCORING SUMMARY Brock 1-1:2 Montreal: 0-0:0 First Half: 1.
