CONSOLATION #2 CIS championship: Hawks rally to beat Dal, will play for fifth

LANGLEY, B.C. (CIS) - Jennifer Fewster-Yan scored two second-half goals to lead the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over the Dalhousie Tigers in Friday's second consolation semi-final at the 2008 CIS women's soccer championship hosted by Trinity Western University.

"For the balance of the first half it was a fairly even game," commented Laurier head coach Barry MacLean. "I thought in the second half we played a lot better with more passion and excitement. We didn't have to work on anything tactical. It was more about character?but they proved me wrong."
Fewster-Yan's game winner came in the dying minutes of a match that looked like it would be heading to extra time. But with less than two minutes remaining the Scarborough, Ont., native took a pass from fellow forward Ali McKee (Bracebridge, Ont.) and after the ball was initially blocked, she was able to beat a Dalhousie defender to the ball and knock it into the open net.
"We started off slow and at half we talked about picking up our speed and we worked a lot better in the second half," commented Fewster-Yan. "Credit to my fellow striker Ali, who set me up for both of my goals. She worked hard all game."
After a balanced first period the Tigers were able to take the lead going into the break on a goal by Kim Hardy. The Dartmouth, N.S., native was able to get her head on a corner kick by Kate MacDonald (Elmsdale, N.S.) in the 40th minute to put the Dalhousie up 1-0.
Coming out of the break trailing by a goal, the Golden Hawks played a more determined style and were quickly rewarded for their efforts. Fewster-Yan took a cross from McKee and redirected it into the left corner of the net to tie the match at 1-1 in the 50th minute.
Keeper Mal Woeller (Kinburn, Ont.) made 11 saves to record the win for Laurier, while Heather Armstrong (Ottawa) made five saves in the loss.
Laurier will play Ottawa for fifth place Saturday at 6:30 p.m. PT, in a rematch of last Sunday's OUA final won 1-0 by Laurier on penalty kicks.
"We have to regroup and get ourselves back up for the game," commented MacLean on Saturday's match. "There is some motivation to play Ottawa tomorrow and there is on their side too, so it should be an interesting game."
Wilfrid Laurier lost to host Trinity Western 3-0 Thursday and the Gee-Gees suffered a 1-0 setback against Montreal to fall to the consolation side of the eight-team CIS championship draw.
