2008 CIS championship: Quarter-final duels announced

Nikki Wright
OTTAWA (CIS) - The Cape Breton University Capers will open the defence of their first-ever national title against the new kids on the block Thursday in the first quarter-final duel of the 2008 CIS women's soccer championship.

The Capers, whose triumph at home a year ago marked the first CIS title in any sport for CBU, hope to become the first team since the 2003 UBC Thunderbirds to capture back-to-back Gladys Bean Memorial Trophies.

The 2008 Capers picked up where they left off last season as they enter the CIS tournament as AUS champions and as the only undefeated team in the nation with a 12-0-3 overall record in the Atlantic.

Their opponents in Thursday's opening round will be the Brock Badgers, advancing to the Nationals for the first time after a third-place finish at the OUA championship this weekend.

Joining Cape Breton and Brock in Langley, B.C., this week will be the tournament host and Canada West silver medalist Trinity Western Spartans, Canada West champion Victoria Vikes, OUA champion Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, QSSF champion Montreal Carabins, OUA silver medalist Ottawa Gee-Gees, and AUS silver medalist Dalhousie Tigers.

Trinity Western is hosting the CIS tourney for the first time, four years after its lone Gladys Bean Trophy victory in 2004.

Following the Cape Breton-Brock tilt at 11 a.m. Pacific, the other opening round match-ups will see Montreal face Ottawa at 1:30 p.m., Victoria battle Dalhousie at 3:30 p.m., and Laurier play Trinity Western at 6:30 p.m.

The championship will resume Friday with the consolation semi-finals, followed by the national semi-finals and the fifth-place game Saturday, and the bronze medal match and gold-medal final Sunday at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Pacific, respectively.

Note: a complete championship preview will follow on Tuesday.
